When I say this many of us would get panicky. Is our language dying? Think for a moment. Are we using oriya language the way we did fifty years back? Don't you think the new generation is not much interested to write or speak Oriya? May be the growth of English medium schools in Orissa is responsible for this. It's high time we did some thing to save our language.

Why should we blame English medium schools? English medium education is becoming polular every where else in our country. But does it mean that every one is forgetting his mother tongue? It lies in the attitude.

I think we have lesser commitment to our language. All reginal languages are facing threat from English language. But they have not been affected by it, as has been the case with Oriya language.

I don't think we are less committed. But some how things don't work. It's high time all lover of oriya language and culture came forward to do something in this regard.

Developing competencies in many languages takes a lot of effort. English no doubt will continue to hold a lot of importance in business space. Hindi is also important since its an important part of our social fabric specially through the Bollywood. Oriya should continue to be as important on the home/ personal front. The challenge with a lot of Indian languages (Oriya inclusive) is that each one comes with its own script. Now thats an overload for the kids. We should have a model like the European countries where they have preserved their languages but have a common Roman script. Now if we have something like that the pain of learning multiple languages will be heavily reduced.
My husband and I have different mothertongues. So getting the kids to even understand Oriya is a major challenge.
