Hi Everybody,
I have identified some of the problems in orissa. You must be thinking how it will affect us? That is true but awarenesss always makes a difference. I belive in that. I believe that there are some similar questions in everybody's mind. I always wanted to discuss this topic. But never was there the right forum. May be we can make a difference in a small way.
I want to point out some of the problems in orissa. It is very huge task to carry on becuz every part of our state is having problem. May be some part may not be captured. Most of the problems I feel are self-implicated by ourselves . Some are because of politics and some are becuz of carelessness on every one's part.
1. CORRUPTION: We don't have to write about it . Think about the word and count how many times we gave bribe to move some of our files in government office. Did any body ever get anything done with out paying some amount. And those people at the government office think that it's a way of income. A clerk would own two or three houses. A junior engineer is the richest man. Out of all these our normal people are getting a system on which they have no faith, respect or belief.
2. CORREPTED POLICE: I already wrote about corruption then why again on police? Corrupted official means everybody but I have some bad experience with them. That's why I want to point out. Police or let us name them as the guards of the society. A little true story. Once some people of my street caught a boy as a thief and beat him like anything as if they got osama bin laden. Police came very late at the afternoon and they also started beating the boy. It is always a crime to hit minor but who can dare to tell them. We all must have encountered them. Never and ever we felt the sense of security with those people.
3.HYGEINE PROBLEM: People are not properly aware sanitation. All kind of diseases breakout just because of that. If anybody tries to teach them she will be laughed at or ignored.There are no proper way to educate people .Whatever money is sanctioned by govt , officials use it for building good houses for themselves.
4.CULTIVATION: 70% of total population still lives in villages. 75% of total workforce depends on agriculture.The cropped area is about 87.46 lakh hectares out of which 18.79 lakh hectares are irrigated.The total cultivated land is 40% of the total geographecal area. Cliamate and soil plays the vital role.We are blessed with so many powerful rivers. But still our lands remain dry whenever the crops need water. Because there is no good canal system to get the water.
5. FOREST: Orissa covers a total forest area of 58,136.23 sq.kms..These natural resources offers a habitat to the states incredible wildlife. But now these are being spoiled by some people. Due to this it is causing much concern and triggering unprecedented environmental imbalance in the state. This destruction of trees caused by some timber mafia with some corrupt officials from the government. Due to this we suffer droughts and heat waves of 50 degree centigrade,water shortage,environmental pollution and abnormal shift of weather cycle. That's why Orissa has gone through the recurring agonies of drought or flood.
6. NATURAL RESOURCES: We have vast mineral deposit of coal,iron-ore,bauxite,chromite etc. All india mineral resources estimates the mineral deposit of orissa in respect of chromite ,nikel,cobalt,bauxiteand iron-ore are about 98.4%,95.1%.77.5%,52.7%and 33.4% respectively. Despite these vast resources Orissa hasn't made any significant improvement. We export it but don't know how to use them for ourselves . We could have some more plants and more self employment.
7. NAXALITE : The name itself describes problem.It is much more bigger than cross-border terrorism.These are some of our own people wrongly motivated to learn destruction. Naxals are making this state more weak.Without any reason they kill people and police. Naxalites try to ensure that no connectivity programme is to be implemented in those tribal areas which have turned into havens for them. And now center has reduced the funds for mordenisation of orissa police from previous years allocation.(because i think it's party is not ruling in Orissa).

Well said, Manisha. Another point you should have mentioned is about the condition of women in Orissa. In terms of maternal health and womens education we lag far behind. The rate of death of newly born babies is highest in our state. Something is urgently needed to be done about this. |

I have also thought about it. I think Orissa needs some home grown modern saints who can SELFLESSLY do work to help people believe in themselves and help people see the larger social cause. In every part of India specially in the last 500- 800 years there have been saints who have inspired the masses and shown a new direction- be it the Sikh Gurus, Chaitanya MahaPrabhu, Ramkrishna Paranhamsa, Ramdas Swami, Kabir etc. There were several modern day saints during the Freedom movement too.
Jagannath has been protecting Orissa through the years but we need an avatar whom the people will believe in and actually improve their lot.

There is a saint in everybody .
If we take little responcibility without waiting for others to do ti can make a difference.

Every society or state requires individuals who are highly motivated and educated . So, the need of the hour is spread of education. Education does not mean amassing degrees and getting a good job. It means how one uses knowledge for the betterment of people.
Both men and women should work together ,respect each other and give space to each other . Hence, equal involvement and participation of both men and women will lead to the growth of a particular community or society.
